Facing down the Tory onslaught now that Labour is a serious threat
October 1st, 2011After a week in which Labour returned to its historic purpose to counteract and overcome the nasty and destructive consequences of a deeply unjust capitalist system, expect the Tory counter-attack to be vicious, not surprisingly since the Tory party has no ideology or sense of purpose other than to hang on to their power and wealth at any cost. The British Establishment – the bankers and financiers, the industrial and commercial mega-corporations, and the press moguls who try to control what the nation is thinking – have always wanted the three political parties to be inter-changeable, sharing the same neo-liberal capitalist values, the same culture of being beholden to themselves, and fairly much the same programme when unfortunately economic or financial crises forced out their Tory preference and it had to be replaced by a suitably pliant alternative. New Labour fitted the ticket perfectly, with Blair chucking overboard every Labour principle that got in the way of his maintaining his own power, subject to his corporate masters. Now that’s changing the Establisment and their Tory agents will hit back hard. We can already see the beginning of this. (more…)
